(FA Cup 4th Round) Liverpool 1-Arsenal 3

Posted: January 7, 2007 in Arsenal

A rare brace from Tomas and a individual goal from Titi gave us the edge in a match heavily dominated by the home side. Possession stats :Liverpool 62%-Arsenal 38%.
As usual, long balls were the order of the day for them and although Liverpool had much of it, they rarely made our defence work. We started as with Charlton with the only chance being Eboue in for Hoyte and Flamini in for the suspended Cesc.

Our first goal came when Alex decided to cut back to the onrushing Tomas after a counterattacking move and he clipped it wonderfully past the outstretched fingers of Dudek. Second goal came near the halfway mark courtesy of the Liverpool defence with Rosicky easily evading half hearted defending by Kuyt, Garcia, Finnan just outside the penalty box. Gerrard could have saved it but in the words of Shebby Singh

Gerrard looked at the ball at Rositski’s feet and winced, “Oh no, he’s going to shoot,Help”

and stuck out his leg two inches from standing position.

Second half started as it ended, Liverpool’s possession came to nothing until Aurelio came on for Riise and the crosses started to look a bit dangerous. Turning point has to be when Eboue fouled Garcia by a niggly challenge and then proceeded to roll on the ground himself and continued when Liverpool were taking a corner getting a yellow card in the process and flaming the home fans and the home team. He was substituted by Arsene straight away without so much of a check from our physio.

Sure enough, Liverpool scored from another corner via an unmarked Kuyt after a headed pass from Crouch. Liverpool looked threatening and started pinging corners left and right through Aurelio and Pennant. Henry put the game beyond doubt with a fortitious goal after receiving it at the halfway line; knocking it pass a Liverpool player and chased it to the touchline. Carragher seemed to have it covered but he slipped and gifted Henry with an open route to the goal.

Bad luck to Liverpool but they did not make the most of their possession. Something we are normally criticised for. Next up. League cup in Anfield
